As Environmental Planning Supervisor, you will manage a team that provides ecology subject matter expertise in planning initiatives and development application review. You will lead a team of staff who possess specialized expertise in ecological and the application of environmental planning as they identify key natural environments for protection. This includes the development of city-wide and local area planning policies related to ecological protection and the review of development applications and capital project submissions throughout the planning continuum. You will prepare work plans, targets, timelines and budgets for the development and update of conservation and biodiversity policies, plans, and technical guidelines. You will also help to manage planning escalations and develop stronger relationships with key regulators and government counterparts to maintain environmental compliance related to the Water Act and other environmental legislation. You will represent The City on environmental planning and protection issues, including liaison with the public, private organizations and regulatory bodies. Primary duties include:

  • Provide ecological planning expertise for Planning and Development Services, leading the provision of urban conservation planning review services.
  • Initiate and oversee programs aimed at protecting natural environments.
  • Ensure environmental planning and policy input into corporate wide Conservation Planning related policy documents and report new policy initiatives to Council for approval.
  • Coordinate the human resource functions of all direct reports including recruitment, mentoring, training, discipline and termination, performance management and assigning work.
  • Represent the department and the corporation on specific environmental planning issues.
  • Scope, award and manage consulting budget for Environmental Planning projects and ensure management of geospatial datasets related to Environmentally Significant Areas.
  • Work to implement goals and objectives within the Climate Strategy, Environment Strategy, Biodiversity Strategy, Wetland Conservation Plan, as well as ensure appropriate application of provincial and federal legislation related to ecological planning.
 
Qualifications 
  • A degree in the Biology, Ecology, or similar discipline with at least 8 years of progressively more responsible experience in environmental assessment and planning.
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered. 
  • Previous experience supervising or managing teams will be considered an asset.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of environmental legislation and regulation. 
  • Demonstrated ability to balance technical subject matter expertise in the natural science with strategic planning and customer service orientation.
  • The successful candidate will possess excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills, along with mentoring, negotiation, and conflict resolution.

work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
