As a Public Art Collection Specialist, you will be part of the team responsible for the care and maintenance of the City of Calgary public art collection. This includes but is not limited to aspects of preventative treatment, conservation, loan, and collection administration. You will provide collections knowledge, assistance, and support to program staff. You will provide services to internal clients across the corporation as well as external contractors and clients. Primary duties include:
  • Coordinate art loans from the City collection, including packaging, delivery and installation and de-installation of artworks utilizing proper methods and techniques to ensure the integrity of the artifacts are preserved. Receive, unpack, relocate, and assess incoming condition for loan returns.
  • Conduct annual site reviews for all loans which include cleaning, possible relocation, conservation, maintenance and process loan renewals.
  • Maintain the storage facility, including monitoring environmental controls and maintaining pest management control according to industry standards.
  • Oversee and supervise the logistics of shipping by private contractors; coordinate and supervise onsite installations to be completed by private contractors; coordinate and supervise cleaning, repair and maintenance of artworks in the City collection.
  • Prepare and ensure completion of all documentation records for acquisitions (gift or donations), public art commissions and loans.
  • Create or update existing records in PastPerfect database.
  • Manage the procurement and transition to a new Data Asset Management System and Content Management System.
 

Qualifications       

  • A completed 2 year post secondary diploma or 3 year advanced diploma majoring in a related filed such as design, art conservation, art history, art collection management, or museum studies, plus at least 3 years relevant experience working with extensive mixed art collections and conservation/reservation; OR
  • A degree in a related art or art conservation management field, plus at least 1 year of applied experience working with extensive mixed art collections and conservation/preservation.
  • Access to a personal vehicle for work is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
  • Specialized training (including fall arrest training, pest control and WHMIS) are considered an asset.
  • Possess excellent time management skills, able to establish priorities and organize work effectively.
  • Detailed oriented and professional in all interactions with both internal and external collaborators.

Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day 
work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.
