As a Payroll Specialist, you will be responsible for preparing and processing documents required in the administration of all facets of the payroll function. You will communicate with all levels of Calgary Police Service (CPS) members, managers and union representatives to provide information and advice on payroll policies and practices. Primary duties include:

  • Process pay by applying knowledge of Time & Labour to ensure pay is accurate and timely.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients.
  • Provide coaching, guidance and instruction related to payroll procedures and processes.
  • Process retirements, resignations and terminations in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Monitor Sickness & Accident and Worker Compensation Board (WCB) claims to ensure employees are paid for eligible periods and with proper authorization from Ability Management.
  • Set up new employee profiles and enter annual leave entitlement, update step increments and promotions.

 
 
Qualifications 
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED), combined with a completed 1 Payroll Fundamentals Level 1 of the National Payroll Institute formerly known as Canadian Payroll Association.
  • Successful completion of at least 1 additional related post-secondary business or accounting course.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in payroll or a related discipline such as payroll accounting, benefits administration, pensions administration or timekeeping.
  • Knowledge of payroll processes and procedures, pensions, benefits, employment standards, taxation regulations and computer systems including online time entry systems is required.
  • Previous experience with PeopleSoft Human Capital Management (HCM) is considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires efficiency and thoroughness, service orientation, stress tolerance and team building and teamwork. An effective communicator with a focus on results and the ability to build strong relationships.

  • An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.
