As a Transportation Engineer, you will work in the Infrastructure Services Department, a team that designs, builds, and optimizes our infrastructure investment to create inclusive, accessible, creative, and connected resilient communities. You will lead and develop business cases, project initiation, concept design, and functional design of capital projects that simultaneously advance several corporate services while closely involving interested parties. Your projects will take a user-focused, holistic, and multidisciplinary approach to public transit, integrating multi-modal transportation, incorporating infrastructure like streets, sidewalks and pathways, parks and open spaces, and considering housing and recreation opportunities at the same time in the same space. Projects will include light rail transit, bus rapid transit, and transit maintenance facilities; coordination with major roadway projects such as arterial and skeletal roads, intersections and interchanges; and integration of 5A walking and wheeling routes on streets and in open spaces. Projects may also be developed as part of themed or geographic programs. Primary duties include:

  • Manage public transit project scopes and budgets to achieve results aligned with business goals and corporate policies.
  • Respond to corporate, public, and Council-related inquiries.
  • Lead work in complex, unstructured situations, managing risk.
  • Work with colleagues from across the corporation or from other organizations to develop strategic solutions that improve the experience of Calgarians using public spaces.
  • Apply best practices and identify innovative solutions for the planning, design and implementation of transit and multi-modal projects.
  • Prepare and/or oversee technical memos and reports to communicate technical results and recommendations.
 
Qualifications 
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or a related Engineering field.
  • You must have at least 1 year of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work.   • Experience must include transportation engineering and planning in project initiation, concept development and design, and functional planning and design while working with internal and external participants.
  • Experience in transit planning or other aspects of public transit project management will be an asset.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams or managing planning, engineering, or design consultants will be an asset.
  • A master's degree in a related field will be an asset.
  • A Road Safety Professional certification, Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE), Project Management Professional (PMP) designation or International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) designation will be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of transportation software such as Synchro, EMME, HCS, Sidra, VISSIM, and Arc GIS will be an asset.
  • In-depth knowledge of multi-modal complete streets, transit and Transit-Oriented Development design, policy and practice to serve all users of public right-of-way will be an asset.
  • Success in this role requires strong communication, decision-making, and negotiation skills, political acumen, and an ability to work with external partners, Ward office staff, Councillors, and Calgarians.

Compensation: Engineer Level E $91,367 - 137,955 per annum
Days of Work: This position works a 5 day
work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
